Day Trip to Krujë, Albania

View from Krujë Castle (Kalaja e Krujës)

Krujë is 20km outside of the capital, Tirana. Travelers can take a bus from Skanderbeg Square to the transit terminal for 40 lek. Buses and vans depart from the transit terminal to various destinations, including Fushë-Krujë. Vans leave frequently from this city to Krujë. The entire trip from Tirana to Krujë takes under an hour and costs less than $5.

The final van ride weaves up the side of Mount Krujë (Mali i Krujes) and offers breathtaking views. Expect charm, history, and beauty in this city. The Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër) is over 400 years old and one of the oldest in the country: here you can find reasonably priced goods from souvenirs and jewelry, to handmade traditional slippers and clothes.

From Kruja Castle, the view is incredible. As high as it is, it may offer some relief form the heat of the day. In front lies city views as far as the eye can see, and behind lies stunning backdrop of Mount Kruja.

After visiting the market and castle, I went back down to Fushë-Krujë. I dined in a traditional restaurant called Restorant Kruja and ordered fasule me perime, a delicious bean soup!

There is a 10-foot George W. Bush statue in downtown Fushe-Kruja. Interestingly, George W. Bush visited the city in 2007 and was the first president to visit post-communist Albania!

Consider adding Kruja to your list! This city has a lot to offer, and the people are hospitable and sweet.
